Yoo hoo... Over here! Hi. I'm Kevin: Busy social degenerate who happens to be hosting MxMo August. Don't look so surprised. I'm functioning, even if barely... Functioning and completely stoked about the August 11th roundup on Local Flavor. In short, the idea is to post one of two types of drinks:
Option 1: Gather ingredients that are representative of the culture/geography/tackiness of your respective cities and make a drink with a truly place-based style. For example, huckleberries are native to the geographical area where I live, as are elderflowers, potatoes, and extremely conservative, closet-case politicians. (I'm just saying!)Those of you that know me, (so, like... none of you,) probably aren't surprised that I chose local-something as a topic for my turn to host. Locality is an interest of mine not only for environmental reasons, but also because of my passion for developing a culinary style that is unique and culturally sensible for each place. We live in a nation obsessed with globalization and it's killing our planet and, just as tragically, our style! I feel the same way about food globalization as I feel about Crocs... and take my word, it is a violent emotion.
Option 2: Dig up an old drink that came from your city and revive it! If you can find the original bar, that would be even more interesting.
This topic should dovetail nicely with the July MxMo following Tales, which is a similar idea but specific to New Orleans. New Orleans is rich is culinary history and should provide a good excercise for returning to your own city to put together something truly place-based.
Drop a link to your post as a comment below or email me at kevin (at) savethedrinkers (.) com by midnight on August 11th to be included in the roundup. Until then, have fun with the July MxMo... and for those of you gracing New Orleans next week, I'll see you (maybe in double/blurred vision) at the Carousel Bar!

I *love* this theme :)
The hard part for me might be coming up with a "drink local" angle we haven't covered already. But I'm sure we'll manage...
Thanks for hosting!
Creating a Pittsburgh drink is virtually impossible without getting overly creative. So we created an interesting bloody mary to cure the hangover from the South Side Bar crawl that is packed with vitamins and b12 to ward off event the toughest day after. www.firehouse-lounge.com
Started a topic today and it looks like the eGullet crowd will be down with this: MxMo XXX--Local Flavor, Cocktails with a Local Twist. I apologize for bringing up the whole "XXX" thing and what might come of it, but I think it is hilarious. Roll on.
Here is my entry, i write about the Swedish punsch as my city has no regional cocktail.

Hello! This is Fred from CocktailVirgin and here is my entry, the Winter Hill, to represent my city of Somerville, MA. It's an original drink that uses many Somerville grown and produced ingredients.

The drink is the blackberry gin shrub, inspired by the invasive blackberry bushes all around me in the Seattle, WA area.
My cocktail comes straight to you from the Upper East Side and is a spin on the classic Manhattan

By good luck and happenstance, a post I made on Friday fits this theme! For an 08/08/08 party, I made Ward Eight cocktails, which were developed in Boston. My ten-year-old niece believes she's improved the drink. Maybe she's right.

If only this could have been the September theme ... the fig-infused Bourbon, with nearly fist-sized figs from my backyard, won't be ready for a while (and that would be about as local as it gets).
Instead I'll be featuring one locally-created cocktail from one of Los Angeles' best bars, that ties into not only the city's history but the bar's as well, plus another of said bar's concoctions named after our fair village.
The Brock & Co. and The Los Angeles Cocktail.
I'm up with my triple post of three drinks at the blog formerly known as A Dram of Brine.

This is totally the best theme of all time. Totally. Felicia, being from the Finger Lakes region of New York, posted the recipe for her controversial Sage Riesling Cocktail.

I sincerely hope that this will be the lamest MxMo post in the history of the genre. Don't click the link. Seriously. I mean it.
I love the theme, it just couldn't be worse for me personally.
I had various ideas for this, from a bar crawl to a look at several English-influenced cocktails. Instead I went for the English classic, the G&T.
Cheers for hosting Kevin!

Kevin, Darling. We love your challenge. Brooklyn’s where we live, Brooklyns are what we drink. We came up with a good solution to the amaro problem. Hope you all enjoy. If not, we’ll bust your kneecaps. Bottoms Up!

Here is my entry. . .
http://bunnyhugs.org/2008/08/11/mixology-monday-the-rainbow-warrior/
Just a simple highball using feijoa flavored vodka. Feijoa originally comes from Brazil but New Zealand has adopted it more enthusiastically than anywhere else I know of.
And errr. . . then we have the name. Very local, what with the Rainbow Warrior getting bombed in Auckland harbor and all.
Thanks to Erik Ellestad, for putting his post up, which reminded me we were doing this. What would I do without him? Drink a lot less, that's for sure.

My humblest apologies on my tardiness, Kevin. I blame the watermelon. Don't worry, it's been handled...some "cleaner" that goes by "Gallagher" came by.
Also, great theme, thanks for hosting.
I'm throwing this up on this post too, since I'm late.
